Founding Director

Current Professional Activities
I founded BioArt Theatre Laboratories, Inc. in New York in 1988, and have led workshops in BioArt training in North America and Europe to actors, teachers, and business executives ever since, refining the training and deepening the research over time. BioArt began an expansion in 2008 with a team of artists and arts educators, with an eye towards implementing BioArt techniques in U.S. schools and in teacher training. In April 2009, we produced a DVD illustrating our pedagogical work. With the support of the Educational Theatre department at NYU, we are currently applying for grants to create video and software modules to share our methods with teachers and teacher trainers. A BioArt retreat center is underway in Thailand and a BioArt institute for artists is in the planning stages in Paris. I am currently involved in directing and coordinating all aspects of this expansion.

Sanja Jankovic
BioArt Institute Teacher, Creative Movement for the Stage

Read an interview with Sanja Jankovic

Sanja Jankovic was born and received her education in Croatia. She studied contemporary dance at the School for Ballet and Modern Dance from the age of 4 and then studied acting at the Academy of Dramatic Arts (University of Zagreb). She performed professionally as a dancer and actress for many years in independent and institutionalized theaters in Croatia, Hungary, Austria, the UK, and France. After performing as the Queen of the Night in the ballet “Barocco Amore Mio” in 1988, she was asked to assist the choreographer Lela Gluhak-Buneta in numerous productions. After a few years of collaborative work, Sanja started to work independently as a choreographer and also as an assistant director. For years she worked closely with the director Petar Vujacic especially for operatic works, notably, “La Nozze de Figaro,” at the Croatian National Theatre, and “Preobrazaj,” for the Music Biennale, Zagreb. Simultaneous to the above, she continued teaching contemporary dance and movement. After years of teaching at the School for Modern Dance and at youth centres, Sanja collaborated with Petar Vujacic in a teaching program for students of operatic singing at the Music Academy of the University of Zagreb. Since then, she has been teaching creative movement for the stage to performers of different disciplines in Croatia, India, and France. Even though she incorporates various methods and techniques, her teaching is based primarily on Laban’s Movement Analysis. The aim of her programme is to provide advanced training in awareness and development of the body as an instrument in stage performance
